What is it?

TOP Sport

We are supporting Primary School teachers by investing into a resource for School teachers.

  • TOP Sport is for primary schools, providing training and resources for primary teachers and developing physical and social skills in young children
  • Average number of hours a trainee primary teacher gets at university for PE is 8 hours, which is not enough to support them in delivering such a demanding and active part of the primary curriculum.

The Matalan TOP programme is designed to give primary teachers the confidence and knowledge to deliver more exciting and challenging PE lessons than 8 hours of training at University could give them.

yoUR Activity

In Secondary schools, we see a huge drop off of pupils taking part in PE as they are switched off by main stream sports such as football, cricket and netball.  We have therefore provided a frame work for non – traditional sports to be introduced into school PE lessons and to create after school clubs.

These are: -
Parkour, Street Cheer, Jump Rope, Ultimate Frisbee, Dodgeball, Tchouckball, Rowing, Orienteering and Softball

AIM: Engaging All Students in and through Sport (Increasing Participation/Whole School Impact) by:-

  • Equipping young people with the ability and desire to sustain their involvement in sporting activity beyond their school life.
  • Improving the Sports Offer in Schools (“Widening the Breadth” of provision & supporting transition into club and community Sport).
  • Motivating Young People to take responsibility themselves (Embedding Sport/Activity/Leadership).

Maximising the school as a community resource.
